Fontes confirmaram à Agência EFE que Sherchan, um militar reformado, morreu na tarde de sexta-feira (5) no interior de sua barraca no acampamento, que fica a 5.365 metros de altitude. Ele tinha chegado ao local como parte de um grupo de cinco alpinistas, segundo o enviado do Departamento do Turismo do Nepal, Gyanendra Shrestha.
“Há em andamento uma investigação para esclarecer as causas da morte. Os médicos suspeitam de um ataque cardíaco”, disse Shrestha. O diretor da companhia contratada pelo grupo, Shiva Thapa, também confirmou a morte do militar reformado.
Em 2008, Sherchan, então com 77 anos, se tornou o alpinista mais velho a subir ao topo do Everest, uma façanha que foi superada em 2013 pelo japonês Yuichiro Miura, que tinha 80 anos.
O incidente ocorre uma semana depois da morte do suíço Ueli Steck, um dos alpinistas mais importantes do mundo, que caiu perto do segundo acampamento do Everest.
Mais de 350 alpinistas receberam a autorização do governo do Nepal para escalar o Everest nesta temporada, um número recorde depois de anos de uma crise no setor devido ao terremoto que atingiu o país em 2015 e a avalanche que, um ano antes, matou 16 montanhistas.
